A Loving Father
Category: Movies - Drama
Merchant: Mountain View Movies
Price: $3.49

Real life father and son G?rard Depardieu and Guillaume Depardieu star in this almost too-close-for-comfort drama about fame and family dysfunction. Paul (Guillaume) is a twenty-something drifter who has lived his life in the shadows of celebrated novelist Leo (G?rard), his emotionally and communicatively distant father. When news gets to Paul that his father has won a Nobel-like prize for literacy, he cracks. While dad is motorcycling to Stockholm to receive his prize, Paul follows and, after his attempts at civil conversation with him (Leo is dismissive of his ?good for nothing? son), he stalks him. When an accident involving Leo leaves him dazed, he regains his senses to find he has been abducted by his son. Now, tied down and essentially kidnapped, the two ? trapped with each other as they travel the European countryside ? begin to talk. The complexities of family dynamics are brilliantly illustrated in this fast-paced, at times bitterly funny tale. The elder Depardieu is in top form as the brusque, independent father who takes no responsibility and Guillaume is both menacing and sympathetic as a young man unable to loosen himself from the debilitative effects of an unhappy childhood. French filmmaking at its finest. (French with English subtitles) -- Ray Murray

A River Runs Through It
Category: Movies - Drama
Merchant: Mountain View Movies
Price: $4.00

A lyrical and nostalgic film from director Robert Redford (Quiz Show, Ordinary People), based on the popular autobiographical novel by Norman MacLean, A River Runs Through It shows the best that modern filmmaking has to offer. The film chronicles two brothers coming of age in early-20th-century Missoula, Montana, under the stern tutelage of their minister father, played by Tom Skerritt (Top Gun). Their father instills in them a love of fly fishing, which for one brother (Brad Pitt) becomes a lifelong passion even as he sets out to become a newspaperman and struggles with his addiction to gambling. The other brother, Norman (Craig Sheffer), dreams of exploring the world outside of Missoula as he falls in love with a local girl (Emily Lloyd) who also dreams of broader horizons. Soon one brother must discover the true meaning of family loyalty when the other finds himself in deeper trouble than ever before. Redford, who also narrates the film, does a masterful job in re-creating the period and in drawing out affecting performances from his young cast. An Oscar winner for Philippe Rousselots luminescent cinematography, this is a poignant and special film.

Bastoni: The Stick Handlers
Category: Movies - Drama
Merchant: Mountain View Movies
Price: $3.49

One of the few films ever made about the porn industry to depict its denizens with an honest, humane tenderness ? rather than as simplified fodder for cheap laughs or sensationalized moralizing ? Bastoni: Stick Handlers stands as one of the most pleasant surprises to emerge from the Japanese film world in recent memory. Director Kazuhiko Nakamura has created a feature debut which is often absurdly funny and truly tragic within the same moments. The film explores the unique choices made by its characters and illuminates the confusing impact that sexuality has on all of our lives. And the movie's also really dirty, too. Yamaguchi (Shunsuke Matsuoka) is a popular actor in the Adult Video (AV) industry, married to another porn star, the sweet Natsuki (Yuka Kojima), who is retiring from the field to deliver their first child. Yamaguchi's earlier relationship with Miyuki (Amiko Kanetani) ended when she learned of his then-new career in the sex industry, yet he has often regretted losing her. Miyuki becomes determined to make her ex-boyfriend see the error of his career choice ? so she enters the AV world herself, and befriends her ex's pregnant new bride. Director Nakamura has worked as an assistant director in Japan's adult video industry for the past decade and the film benefits greatly from Nakamura's insider take on the subject matter. The result is a refreshingly intelligent and perceptive examination of the industry, with moments that manage to be comical, sad, and erotic (the sight of older AV performer Matsunaga sobbing hysterically and eating dinner following the abandonment of his family is unforgettable). (Japanese with English subtitles) --Travis Crawford

Blue Velvet
Category: Movies - Drama
Merchant: Mountain View Movies
Price: $4.00

David Lynch peeks behind the picket fences of small-town America to reveal a corrupt shadow world of malevolence, sadism, and madness. From the opening shots Lynch turns the Technicolor picture postcard images of middle class homes and tree-lined lanes into a dreamy vision on the edge of nightmare. After his father collapses in a preternaturally eerie sequence, college boy Kyle MacLachlan returns home and stumbles across a severed human ear in a vacant lot. With the help of sweetly innocent high school girl (Laura Dern), he turns junior detective and uncovers a frightening yet darkly compelling world of voyeurism and sex. Drawn deeper into the brutal world of drug dealer and blackmailer Frank, played with raving mania by an obscenity-shouting Dennis Hopper in a career-reviving performance, he loses his innocence and his moral bearings when confronted with pure, unexplainable evil. Isabella Rossellini is terrifyingly desperate as Hoppers sexual slave who becomes MacLachlans illicit lover, and Dean Stockwell purrs through his role as Hoppers oh-so-suave buddy. Lynch strips his surreally mundane sets to a ghostly austerity, which composer Angelo Badalamenti encourages with the smooth, spooky strains of a lush score. Blue Velvet is a disturbing film that delves into the darkest reaches of psycho-sexual brutality and simply isnt for everyone. But for a viewer who wants to see the cinematic world rocked off its foundations, David Lynch delivers a nightmarish masterpiece.

Born on the Fourth of July
Category: Movies - Drama
Merchant: Mountain View Movies
Price: $4.00

The second film in Oliver Stones Vietnam trilogy moves from the brutality of war in Platoon to its equally traumatic aftermath. Based on the memoir of combat veteran Ron Kovic, the film stars Tom Cruise as Kovic, whose gunshot wound in Vietnam left him paralyzed from the chest down. He is deeply embittered by neglect in a veterans hospital and by the shattering of his patriotic idealism because of the horror and futility of the Vietnam conflict. While painfully and awkwardly adjusting to his disability and a changing definition of masculinity, Kovic joins the burgeoning movement of antiwar protest, culminating in a climactic appearance at the 1976 Democratic national convention. A powerfully intimate portrait that unfolds on an epic scale, Born on the Fourth of July is arguably Stones best film (if you can forgive its often strident tone), and Cruises Oscar-nominated role is uncompromising in its depiction of one mans personal anguish and political awakening. --Jeff Shannon
