30 Days of Night (2007)
I rated this movie: Movie Reviews - 30 Days of Night Rate this film
The movie 30 Days of Night was based off a graphic novel released in 2002, written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. The movie was a fresh new take on vampires, the way they look, act, talk and how they do things. The movie was adaptation to a movie in 2007, starring Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor), Melissa George (The Amityville Horror), and Danny Huston (Children of Men).

The movie is based in a small town in Alaska, which was getting ready for their 30 days of night, 30 days of no sun. We follow a group of people who have declined to stay behind, but it was not going to be the same. A group of visitors would make the towns-people’s life a living nightmare.

The great thing about this movie is the different take on vampires. We are used to seeing vampires with fangs, two long and pointy teeth. Also spoke nothing but English, but not in 30 Days of Night. In this movie all their teeth are pointy and different lengths and they also had their own language. The vampires are well disciplined and have things planned out to a “T,” well that is what they think because what kind of movie would this be without a hero to save the day.

This was a great horror movie and everything about this movie worked. The choices of actors were right on. I believed everything they felt and they’re actions. I was not too sure on Josh Hartnett but I loved his take on the character. Josh is such a pretty boy that I didn’t believe he could pull off a hero, he played Sheriff Eben Oleson. He is the sheriff of the town so it is up to him to protect as many of the people as he can, and Josh did a great job of being the strong and caring hero he had to be.

Choice for heroine was Melissa George who already had one horror movie under her belt and added another great horror movie to that list. She was a powerful, loving, strong woman figure, which she pulled off well. Melissa plays Stella Oleson, a Fire Marshall and also Eben’s wife, which has to do her job and get out of town before it was to late but gets stuck behind.

As the villain was an actor that I didn’t really know, I saw him in a few movies before this one, so I didn’t know what kind of villain he was going to be. Danny Huston played Marlow, the leader of the vampire clan. The only vampire that, we know of that, which spoke any English. He was very smart and powerful, which Danny pulled off well.

Over all it was a great cast, location, make-up and special effect, which just brought the movie together well. If you love horror movies as much as I do, you will love 30 Days of Night take on the vampire story.
