The Secret Life of Bees (2008)Avg. Rating: (out of 4 stars) Rate this film Rated: PG-13 Directed by: Gina Prince-Bythewood Starring: Lily Owens, August Boatwright and Jennifer Hudson Tagline: Bring Your Girlfriends, Sisters, Mothers and Daughters Favorite line: Length: 110 minutes Plot: The story of a 14 year-old girl that is haunted by the memory of her late mother.Review by Steph L (1 reviews): The secret Life of Bees was truly unique, considering recent movies have been horribly predictable. Dakota Fanning plays a more mature role as a teenager named Lily Owens and co-stars with Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jenifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo. Lily Owens is a runaway in South Carolina in 1964, who seeks shelter with a group of African American sisters who take her in, as well as her African American housekeeper. As the sisters get to know Lily and her housekeeper, they start to become family. They also come to realize that they share a connection from the past. I gave this movie three stars, not only because of its highly intelligent storyline, but because you will truly start to care for each character as the plot unfolds. The only reason why I did not give it four stars is because it probably will not reach all audiences. For fear of calling it a “chick flick,” I will simply say that it has more emotional action than physical. Nonetheless, it is a movie that will touch your heart. Definitely rent it.
